NEWARK, N.J. – The Bloomfield College Bears baseball team had a solid outing Thursday afternoon at West Side Park as they won an 8-7 decision over the visiting Knights of Queens College. The Bears first baseman,
Harry Montero (Millville, N.J.) had a career day, going 3-for-4 with two home runs.
Bloomfield improved to 5-14 with the non-conference victory and the Knights fell to 8-12 on the year with the setback.
Back to back two-out doubles got the scoring underway for Queens in the top of the third as the visitors took a 1-0 lead. The Bears answered quickly in the bottom half with a Montero two-run homer to left field after
Juan Reina (Paterson, N.J.) doubled to right center.
Bloomfield erupted for five more runs in the fourth and took a commanding 7-1 advantage.
Brandon Morales (Hialeah, Fla.) began the action with a single up the middle followed by a sac-bunt from Azmir Garcia (Passaic, N.J.). Junior
Harold Hester (Lakehurst, N.J.) drew a walk and Reina blasted a single to centerfield that scored two runs after a throwing error and landed the Bears short stop on third. Cristopher Cabral (Lodi, N.J.) belted a single to right that scored Reina after Montero was hit by a pitch and then
Stephon Moore (Newark, N.J.) drove in the first baseman with another shot to right. An error by the pitcher allowed Cabral to come home and the Bears were in the driver's seat.
Anthony Lantigua (Belleville, N.J.) led off the home 7
th with a double to left and then stole third base but Bloomfield was unable to bring in the run. The Knights picked up three as senior reliever
Justin Eclavea (South San Francisco, Calif.) started the eighth and gave up a two-run homer followed by a score on a wild pitch.
Montero stepped to the plate and sent a solo shot back over the left field fence in the home half of the eighth and gave the Bears an 8-4 lead and what proved to be the deciding run.
Senior closer,
Kyle Murzyn (Glassboro, N.J.) surrendered a home run and two walks before giving way to
Shayne Shekon (Brick, N.J.) who allowed two runs and then shut the door on the Knights comeback hopes to pick up his first save of the year.
Freshman
Justin Torres (Teaneck, N.J.) went seven innings on the mound and picked up his first collegiate win scattering seven hits with one earned run, four strikeouts and two walks on the day.
Next up the Bears continue their home stand with a doubleheader against Chestnut Hill on Saturday, April 2. The Griffins make their first appearance at West Side Park with game one's first pitch ready to go at 12:00 pm.
