TITUSVILLE, FLA. - The Bloomfield College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Claflin University Monday afternoon, picking up Game One, 6-0 and dropping Game Two, 4-2 in Titusville, Fla. at the Cocoa Beach Spring Break Tournament.
The split evens the Bears overall record at 4-4 on the season and left the Panthers with a 10-11 mark.
The Bears scored their six runs on eight hits in Game One with
Paige Lafferty (Liberty Hill, T.X.) going 2-for-3 and
Aubrey Orr (Gallup, N.M.) going 2-for-4.
Faith Apolskis (Soquel, Calif.) proved to be the Bloomfield spark plug in the opening game, going 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored and chipped in a stolen base. Orr and Apolskis accounted for the Bears two runs in Game Two, going 1-for-3 and 1-for-2 respectively.
Orr drove in a run in the bottom of the third with a double to left, to take the 1-0 lead in Game One of the doubleheader. The Bears pushed across four in the bottom of the fifth as
Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, P.A.) singled up the middle to plate
Greta Coleman (Indianola, WA) and take a 2-1 lead. Apolskis two RBI came next as she doubled and later scored on a passed ball that pushed the Bloomfield advantage at 5-0. The Bears would put up one more run in the bottom of the six after
Mariah Frazier (Port Angles, W.A.) crossed the plate on a passed ball with the junior transfer drawing a lead off walk to get on base.
In Game Two the Bears threatened to keep the pressure on the Panthers, scoring two runs in the top of the first to start the scoring. Claflin had another idea though, as they cut their deficit in half during the bottom of the inning and evened the game at 2-2 on a solo homer to left by
Kayla Cato in the fourth inning. A two out two RBI single through the left side snapped the tie and gave Claflin the 4-2 lead heading into the seventh and ultimately the win in Game Two.
Wilson pitched five innings and picked up the win on the mound in Game One while
Stephanie Miller (Temecula, Calif.) picked up the loss in Game Two after three and two-thirds innings of work.
Bloomfield will face Judson University in the third game of the day with the first pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
