BEARS SHOOT PAST RAMS, 61-58 IN CACC HOME BATTLE

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The Bears women's basketball team used a 31 to 25 surge over the final two quarters to rise over the visiting Rams from Philadelphia University Wednesday evening at the Den. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) battle featured a game-high 21 points from senior guard Tianna Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) and 11 point contributions from Jahniece Jaffe (Egg Harbor, N.J.) and Deja McKenzie (Baltimore, M.D.) who both came off the bench to aid Bloomfield in the, 61-58 win.

How It Happened
  • The teams jockeyed for position in the first quarter and came to an 11-11 deadlock before Alexia' Tucker (Halifax, Va.) knocked down a three to put the home team up but PhilaU responded with a 6-0 run to pull ahead 17-14 by the end of the period
  • Jaffe drilled consecutive shots from beyond the arc to start the second quarter action for Bloomfield. The Rams fought back and led for most of the frame as they took a 33-30 advantage into the halftime break
  • Smith provided the spark for the CACC North Division squad as she netted 12 points in the first half of play
  • A bucket in the paint with 4:12 remaining in the third period gave PhilaU their largest lead of the quarter (43-37) but Smith buried consecutive three-pointers that drew the teams even once again. The Rams settled for a 47-46 edge as the squads prepared for the final period
  • The Bears seized the momentum with 2:58 remaining on the clock as Deja McKenzie (Baltimore, M.D.) hit a bucket in the paint the put the home team up by four (57-53). Free throws down the stretch by the Bears and missed opportunities on offense by the Rams sealed the deal on the home team's fifth consecutive league win

Up Next: Bloomfield will head on the road to take on another Philadelphia team on Saturday as the square up with the CACC South Division leader, USciences. The match up with the Devils is set for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
