ORANGEBURG, NY – The Bloomfield College softball team earned their second split in league play on Wednesday afternoon when they traveled to face Dominican College. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) battle saw the Chargers take Game 1, 8-0 in 5 innings and then the Bears came growling back for a 10-7 decision in Game 2.
Each team moved to, 2-2 in CACC action with Bloomfield posting a 2-8 overall record and Dominican sitting at 5-9 overall.
Senior hurler,
Kiersten Coho (East Freedom, Pa) got the start in Game 1 and was still in search of her first victory of the season as she gave up 6 runs, all earned, on 7 hits while striking out 2. The Chargers erupted for 5 runs in the bottom of the 5
th and quickly ended Game 1 with junior transfer,
Lauren Booth (Maple Shade, NJ) making an appearance and gave up the final two runs of the opener.
Head Coach,
Ashton Corley commented on her team, "Game one, we didn't make adjustments at the plate quickly enough--that is on us. In between games we talked about what we needed to do to be successful in game two and then executed. We had some clutch defensive plays, highlighted by a stellar game by
Brianna Johnson (Sun Valley, Calif) at third and a huge diving catch in right field by
Raylene Uribe (Riverside, Calif)."
Bloomfield sought redemption in Game 2 and found it as their bats came alive, belting, 12 hits leading to a season-high 10 runs. Coho got some 'get back' when she blasted her first home run of 2018 in the 5
th inning and went into the circle and recorded her first save of the year after relieving, Maddie Fedderson (Islip, NY) who got the start and the win. Senior catcher,
Lauren Nickerson (Bemus Point, NY) also went yard for her first homer of 2018 and along with freshman,
Mariah Wysocki (Voorhies, NJ), drove in two runs in Game 2 for the Bears.
"This was a full team win, and an important one," Coach Corly said. "Dominican has a strong program and this split is going to really help us down the road. We have a lot of potential and talent on this team, I do believe we are still learning and growing. Just hearing what the girls are saying in the huddles, you can tell they are starting to piece together what it takes to win at this level. I am excited to see what we can do when we are playing our best for 14 innings. We are constantly learning, growing, and improving. It should be a fun April."
With a slew of postponed games due to inclement weather in the Northeast, Bloomfield gets set for another CACC double-dip on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears will finally play their home opener as they welcome the Devils of USciences to Clarks pond South for a 3:00 pm start in Game 1.
