COLUMBUS, GA – The Bloomfield College softball team got their 2018 campaign off to a rocky start, going 0-4 during the opening weekend of play. The squad began the 'Bears Deep Down South Spring Break Trip' with a Saturday afternoon matchup with Barry University and Columbus State University. The contests were held on the campus of Columbus State where the Bears fell, 5-0 against the Buccaneers from Barry and later dropped a 12-1 decision to the hosting Cougars.
"The message of the day was overcoming adversity," said head coach, Ashton Corley. "The coaching staff's message has been controlling the 'controlables' this season and we are continuing to learn how to do that as a team. The fact that the girls came out and faced very good competition after a 20 hour bus ride in bad weather and still had a positive outlook and a growth mindset says a lot about this team's mental toughness, love for each other and the game."
Bloomfield saw a solid game at first base from freshman,
Jarae Keli'ikoa (Wahiawa, HI) who produced five quality at-bats. Senior,
Raylene Uribe (Riverside, Calif.) also showed patience at the plate and leadership as a veteran that made her a key piece in the Bears line up.
Sunday afternoon, Bloomfield returned to Columbus State for another match up with the Cougars and dropped a 9-1 decision after suffering a 12-0 setback against Newberry College. Coach Corley commented, "Our focus is getting better every single game down here and I think we did that despite the scores. We are a young team, but our freshmen are making huge strides in a short amount of time. I look forward to watching them develop throughout this trip and season."
Bloomfield will leave Georgia and drive north to South Carolina to face Claflin University in a doubleheader on Wednesday, the final day of their Spring Break trip. A scheduled double-dip against Erskine College on Tuesday was called off due to inclement weather. Game 1 is set to begin at 2:00 pm against the Panthers in Orangeburg, SC.
