ORANGEBURG, NY –
Laityn Sarna (Las Vegas, NV) had a career-high 45 assists in the Bears Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener Tuesday night but it was not enough to lift the visitors in a five-set thriller at Dominican College. The Chargers (1-8, 0-1 CACC) edged out Bloomfield (0-11, 0-1 CACC) for their first win of 2018.
The Bears started strong taking the first set of the match, 25-21 as the teams battled with long rallies. Sets 2 & 3 went to the home team as Coach Baxter Court was surrounded by Dominican faithful watching their team win 25-23 in the middle sets. Bloomfield dug in deep and pulled out Set 4, 26-24 to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Bears pulled in front, 6-2 to open the final frame but the Chargers stormed back with 9-out-of the next 11 points to go up, 11-8. Bloomfield's comeback fell just short as Dominican finished off the contest 15-12 to claim the league victory.
The conference match featured season-highs from
Danielle Quintanar (El Paso, TX) who recorded 17 kills to lead the Bears along with 18 digs while sophomore libero,
Junelly Marrero (Las Vegas, Cantano, Puerto Rico) posted a career-high 34 digs. Junior transfer,
Juliette Tygret (Gilbert, AZ) registered a season-high 18 digs and 14 kills;
Ashley Stroot (Rolesville, NC) chipped in 3 blocks to the Bloomfield effort.
The Bears turn their sites to Caldwell University as the Cougars come to the Den for the Home Opener on Friday, September 14. The crosstown CACC rivalry game is set for a 6:00 pm start.
