ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY – The Bears men's basketball team suffered a heart-breaking, 73-69 setback on the road at Molloy College. The Saturday afternoon match-up against the Lions dropped Bloomfield's record to 3-2 while the home team improved to 2-3 on the year. The loss mark the Bears second-straight against an East Coast Conference (ECC) team.
The first half saw junior Darin Bellinger (Stroudsburg, PA) go lights out with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor which included 5-of 6 from 3-point range. Senior Safee Abdus-Sabur (West Orange, NJ) continued his excellent offensive effort, pouring in 13 points in the opening frame to help his team to a 41-31 advantage heading into the break. The visiting Bears shot 50.0 percent (9-of-18) from beyond the arc and led for 97.4 percent (19:29) of the 1st half.
The Lions made a push in the 2nd half and took their first lead of the day, 64-62 with 5:48 left to play. Bloomfield's offense stalled as their last bucket of the contest came at the 3:11 minute-mark and Molloy made a couple free throws to ice the game with seconds remaining on the clock. The tale of the final period was the Bears 1-of-9 (11.1 percent) shooting from 3-point range which helped result in just 28 points in the half.
Abdus-Sabur finished the day with 22 points (8-of-10 FG) while Bellinger managed just two more points in the final have to finish with 17. Senior big-man, Matt Lajeunesse (Union, NJ) saw his four-game double-double streak come to an end as he grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with 8 points.
Bloomfield will return to action Tuesday when they square off with ECC team, The University of Bridgeport. The Bears host the Purple Knights at The Den with a scheduled 7:00 pm tip-off and will have Live Stats and Video available.
