BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The Bloomfield College women's basketball team thrilled their fans with another victory in The Den after a 54-49 decision against Dominican College Saturday afternoon. The win gave the Bears their third-straight and left them with a perfect 2-0 record in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play and 3-7 overall while the Chargers suffered their first loss in league play (2-1) and fell to 4-5 overall.
Bloomfield came out of the gates strong with a 14-10 first quarter as freshman guard, Kayla Sykes (Egg Harbor Township, NJ) hit a three pointer to open her day in the scorebook. Dominican came back in the 2nd quarter and edged out the home team for a 24-23 advantage at intermission.
Sophomore, Jaylah Bennett (Newark, NJ) poured in seven points after the halftime break and the Bears went back up top, 39-34 at the end of the 3rd period. The Chargers trailed by as-many-as ten (44-34) in the final frame but battled back with an 11-0 run to pull in front 45-44 with 3:36 left on the clock. The Bloomfield faithful rallied around their team and the home squad responded down the stretch to seal the CACC win.
Sykes finished the game with a team and career-high, 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor. Bennett recorded 8 total points as did junior Ivana Negron (North Bergen, NJ) who went 3-of-7 from the field and added 5 rebounds. Freshman point-guard, Alaisha Mumford (Jersey City, NJ) led the team in rebounds with 9 and dished out 5 assists to go along with 5 points and 2 steals.Â
The Bears take an extended break for Finals week in the classroom and return to action on Wednesday, December 18th. Bloomfield will travel to Post University to face the Eagles in a CACC North Division showdown at 5:30 pm.Â
