BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The Bloomfield College Bears women's basketball team welcomed Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) only remaining undefeated team on Saturday to The Den and nearly pulled off an upset but fell to Holy Family University, 61-59 on a jumper with seven second reaming on the clock. The heartbreaking loss dropped Bloomfield to 4-14 on the year overall and 3-6 in league games while the Tigers improved to 11-5 overall and 9-0 in CACC contests.
Caitlin Townes (Newark, NJ) paced the Bears offense in her 8th start of the year, scoring 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field. The sophomore guard converted 40.0 percent from beyond three-point range (4-of-10)Â as she and classmate
Jaylah Bennett (Newark, NJ) accounted for 40 of the home team's 59 points in the game. Bloomfield, energized by their home crowd, went into the locker room up, 29-26 as they held the visitors to 34.8 percent shooting from the floor (14-for-30).Â
The 3rd quarter was a stalemate at 17-17 and Bloomfield entered the final period of play clinging to their 3-point advantage (43-46). The home squad increased their lead to nine (56-47) on a Bennett three-pointer with 3:46 remaining in the game. The Tigers clawed away at their deficit and after a 12-2 spurt found themselves up 59-58 with 31 ticks on the clock. Townes went to the line and knocked down 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to tie the score at 59-59Â and setup the last-second heroics from Holy Family.Â
The Bears will try to regroup in their next match on Saturday, January 25th when they travel to face Jefferson University. The CACCÂ road game with the Rams is set for a 6:30 pm start on Herb Magee Court in Philadelphia.
