Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

JULIUS SHINES BRIGHT ON SENIOR DAY; BEARS SECURE 103-96 WIN OVER CHESTNUT HILL

BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The Bears men's basketball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday and saw veteran guard, Dontay Julius (Linden, NJ) lead the way to a, 103-96 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win over Chestnut Hill College. The senior was on fire as Julius dropped a game-high, 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field which included 2-of-4 from beyond three-point range. He also dished out 6 assists and snagged 3 steals in the home win.

Before the start of the game, Bloomfield honored the program's three seniors, Safee Abdus-Sabur (Newark, NJ), Matt Lajeunesse (Union, NJ) and Julius. Abdus-Sabur, who currently leads the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg, has amassed over 1,200 points in his Bloomfield career. Lajeunesse, a workhorse in the paint, has over 600 points and 600 rebound in his career as a Bear and currently ranks amongst the nations top-50 players in total rebounds (21st), rebounds per game (24th) and total blocks (39th). Julius has over 900 points in his career in a Bloomfield uniform and has averaged 1.6 assists per game from his guard position.

The Bears began the game with back-to-back three pointers from Julius and Abdus-Sabur;  a fitting start to Senior Day as Julius buried a jumper at the 18:41 minute mark to cap an 8-0 spurt. The home team extended their breakout  advantage to 26-6 before the Griffins got their bearings in the game and trimmed the deficit to 47-36 at halftime. Bloomfield shot 46.2 percent from the field (18-of-39) in the opening stanza of the game.

The Senior Day crowd in The Den were thrilled to a high-scoring, high-octane 2nd half as both teams shot over 55.0 percent from the floor and combined for 40 made field goals. The Griffins shot a blistering 98.3 percent from the freethrow line (15-of-16) in the final half and clawed to within one (81-80) with 5:33 to go on the clock. On the next Bears possession, Julius calmly sunk a jumper and the visitors never got an opportunity to take the lead in the entire game. Abdus-Sabur put the finishing touches on Bloomfield's highest scoring output (103) since March 5, 2019 (105 vs Wilmington) with an emphatic dunk.

Abdus-Sabur finished the day with 22 points and a team-high, 7 assists. Lajeunesse struggled with foul trouble during the game but managed 10 points in 14 minutes of work. Junior-transfer Daren Bellinger (Stroudsburg, PA) netted 11 points and classmate, Rich Chapman (Newark, NJ) registered 19 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.

With the CACC victory and a Caldwell University loss, Bloomfield leaped into 3rd place in the league's North Division with just three games left to play in the regular season. The Bears are still in position to secure a post-season home game as they get set to face Dominican College on Tuesday, February 18. The 8:00 pm showdown with the division-leading Chargers now holds even more playoff implications.
