BEARS BASEBALL DROP SEASON OPENER TO MERCY, 5-4 ON THE ROAD

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2020) – Bloomfield College dropped their season opener on Thursday in a 5-4 setback against Mercy College. The non-conference loss left the Bears with a 0-1 record while the Mavericks improved to 2-8 on the young season.. 

Leading Bloomfield at the plate was Manuel Andujar (West New York, NJ) who belted a three-run homer in the top of the second inning. The junior transfer went 1-for-4 on the day with 3 RBI and his left field shot opened up the scoring for the game. Senior transfer, Julius Puryear (West Orange, NJ) doubled to left center later in the inning to put the Bears up 4-0 at Mercy Field.

Mercy answered in the bottom of the 2nd with a run off of Bloomfield's starter, Wilfrido Valenzuela (Paterson, NJ) as the game began to take shape. Valenzuela went four solid innings giving up 3 runs, 2 of them earned, on 3 hits and struck out three as he turned the game over to the Bears bullpen up 4-3. Alexis Guerra (Perth Amboy, NJ) came on in the 7th and pitched an inning of relief with two runs allowed to take the loss (0-1)

Puryear finished the day going 2-for-4 with an RBI and Tyree Bradley (West Orange, NJ) went 2-for-4 from the plate for Bloomfield. 

Head Coach Jeff Watson and the Bears resume action on Sunday, March 1st when they travel to take on Pace University for a doubleheader at 12 & 3 p.m.
