BLOOMFIELD, NJ – In the first of three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheaders this week, the Bloomfield College Softball team swept the University of Bridgeport on Tuesday. The Bears are now 10-4 in CACC action and sit in third place behind the Purple Knights who sit in 2nd with a record of 15-5. Bloomfield's freshman, Meaghan Dean hit a walk-off single in each game to help secure the home team's victories on Carla D Ward Field.
In Game One, the Bears took a 3-2 win after Dean's single down the right field line in the bottom of the seventh scored Naya Olacio who reached on a walk. Jocelyn Moody opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first when she hit a shot down the right field line that plated Danielle Walters. Moody and Sierra Albritton teamed up for a double steal in the third as Albritton stole home to put the Bears up, 2-0. In the circle, freshman, Rayn Romero got the nod from head coach, Delanie Cruz in Game 1 and delivered a two-run on three-hits performance while striking out four Purple Knights.
Bloomfield started strong in Game 2 again, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. In the first, Albritton belted a triple down the left field line that drove in Walters who walked to get on. Then in the 2nd inning, Miya Payne got in on the action with a single to left center that brought home Daniela Vidal. Bridgeport responded with three runs in the top of the 5th off Moody who got the start and went five innings, giving up 6 hits and striking out 3. Walters came on in relief in the 6th and cruised until the 8th when the Purple Knights battled ahead for a 5-3 lead. The Bears clawed out an answer in the bottom half as Hailey Connor ripped a two-out double to right center that plated, Vidal and Dean to tie the score at 5-5. The International Tie Break Rule was in effect for the 9th inning and Dean capitalized after the Bears loaded the bases and the freshman found another walk-off single to seal the deal.
Walters picked up the win on the mound, giving up two runs on three hits and also striking out three Purple Knights. Albritton picked up her 2nd stolen base on the day and went 3-for-6 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Dean went 3-for-4 on the afternoon and drove in three runs for the Bears.
