Hearns Leads Bears In Battle Over Spartans, 87-85 On The Road

SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Bloomfield College of Montclair State University men's basketball team hit the road for the New Year and came out on top, 87-85 in non-conference battle with Saint Thomas Aquinas College Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams battle bucket-for-bucket across the first 13 minutes of the contest but the Spartans used a quick 5-0 run with 6:20 on the clock to pull ahead, 30-25.
  • The Bears pulled even again at, 32-32 after an Ellis three-pointer with 4:15 remaining until the break.
  • By the end of the first half, the home team reclaimed their five-point advantage, 41-36
  • In the second half St. Thomas Aquinas built a 14-point advantage (58-44) and put the visitors on their heels after just five minutes of play.
  • Bloomfield rebounded as Hearns caught fire and drew his team even at 69 after a fastbreak layup with 8:20 on the clock.
  • Down by three with a minute-nineteen to play, Hearns sank a three-pointer to tie the game again, this time at 85-85.
  • Ellis would seal the win with a go-ahead bucket in the paint with twenty-five seconds remaining and Ngene made a block at the other end to help thwart the Spartans hopes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bears saw all five starters and Izaiah Poole, off the bench, score in double figures. 
  • Bloomfield was outrebounded by the Spartans 49-39, but dominated, 54-36 on points in the paint. 
  • The road team enjoyed a, 19-13 edge in second chance points and also led 19-9 in points off turnovers.
  • Bloomfield has won 2-out-of-their last 3 non-conference match-ups.
