This wasn't the start to the 2009 season the Deacons had hoped for.
An early goal from freshman
Carlos Brufau gave Bloomfield a 1-0 lead in the first half, but four unanswered goals from the NYIT Bears were too much to overcome, as the Deacons dropped their season opener 4-1 Thursday afternoon at the Wilmington Classic.
Bloomfield took the lead in the 29'th minute, when Brufau put
Andy Aguilar's corner kick in the back of the net to give the Deacons a 1-0 lead. Coach Falloon's squad dominated the opening half offensively, registering eight shots in the first 45 minutes. It appeared their lead was safe heading in the second half, but an NYIT goal with three seconds remaining in the half knotted the score at a goal apiece.
The Bears were able to solve the Deacons on the defensive end allowing only two shots in the second half, and a goal by forward Farah Toure gave the Bears a 2-1 advantage in the 51'st minute. Two late goals by forward Maciek Serafin put the game away, sending the Deacons home with plenty of motivation heading into their Saturday match.
"We just broke down defensively," Falloon said. "We got the early goal, and we just broke down. We need to come together as a team for things to get better. We have to work better as a unit, which I think we will able to do. We've got some work to do, but I think you will see a much better team effort Saturday."
Kickoff for the Deacons' match against East Stroudsburgh University is set for 4:30 PM Saturday at Wilmington University.
