BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The women's basketball team got back to .500 on the season Sunday afternoon, as they rolled to a 73-50 home victory over non-conference foe Southern Connecticut State University. The victory moved Coach Wimberly's squad to 4-4 on the season, the team currently sitting atop the CACC North Divsion with an unblemised 2-0 mark in conference play.
An 8-2 run by the visiting Owls to open the action placed Bloomfield behind the eight ball early, but the Lady Deacons would quickly rebound, ripping off a 10-run of their own to take a 12-10 advantage with 12:44 remaining. The Bloomfield defense took over from there, limiting the Owls to just four second-chance points in the opening minutes and forcing nearly 20 turnovers. The home team would take advantage on the offensive end, notching 16 points off turnovers and building a commanding 43-34 lead heading into the intermission.
It would be a lead they would not relinquish, as the Lady Deacons would utilize their size advantage in the low-post and outscore Southern Connecticut 20-4 in the paint over the final 20 minutes of play. The frontcourt duo of
Tiffany McDaniel and
Jamila Garrett combined for 25 points on the afternoon, leaving the Owls with no answers for the fierce low-post combo. The Lady Deacons would double Southern Connecticut's scoring output in the second half, closing out the victory and rolling to the 73-50 win.
"Anytime you can get a quality non-conference victory, it's always a great thing," head coach Jerry Wimberly said. "I'm very happy with the way we played today. We had a very solid effort defensively, and on the offensive end we had contributions from a lot of different players. We're on a little bit of a roll here, so hopefully we can keep it going as we move into the new year."
McDaniel totaled 14 points to lead the scoring for Bloomfield, to go with five rebounds and a pair of steals. Garrett tallied 11 points and six rebounds in just 14 minutes of action, while junior guard
Vanessa Lamison continued her outstanding season with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals.
The team returns to action Wednesday, December 29 with a non-conference home contest against Stone Hill College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
