Deacons come from behind to take down Dominican 2-1 in overtime victory

ORANGEBURG, NY - In a marquee battle of the CACC's only regionally-ranked opponents, it was Coach Falloon's Deacons who emerged victorious on the road Tuesday afternoon, coming from behind to notch a 2-1 overtime victory against conference rival Dominican College and push their CACC record to a perfect 4-0.  Ranked fifth in the East Region, the Deacons moved to 7-1 on the 2010 season, with a pair of juniors providing the heroics en route to the huge conference win.

It seemed as though the Chargers were primed to hold serve on their home turf in the opening half, when Sonny Narro beat Bloomfield keeper Steven Alonso to give Dominican a 1-0 advantage in the 29'th minute.  The Deacons could not draw even in the frame's remaining minutes, unable to capitalize on three shots that were turned away by Chargers keeper Brandon Heembrock.

But the Deacons were the squad who made the adjustments that counted during the intermission, as they dominated the action for the final 45 minutes of regulation.  The stifling defensive front surrendered just a single shot in the second half, allowing the club's potent offense to find its rhythm while remaining just a goal behind.  The group broke through in the 61'st minute, when junior forward Terry Gibbs played a pass from Juan Ramirez off his chest, and unleashed a beautiful left-footed volley to the upper 90, drawing the Deacons even at a goal apiece.  The two sides were unable to create a game-winner through the final 29 minutes, forcing the Deacons fourth overtime match of the 2010 season.

It took just eight and a half minutes for Bloomfield to notch the golden goal, when a misque by Heembrock off a shot from Carlos Brufau allowed the ball to find its way to the back of the net, giving the Deacons their second overtime victory over a regionally-ranked opponent, and putting the club in the driver's seat in the CACC playoff race.

"This was one of our most important wins of the season," head coach Peter-John Falloon said.  "Dominican is a great team, but most importantly, it showed our players they can beat anyone, and that they can come from behind to do it.  It should show them they should never stop believing in themselves, because they are not out of any game, no matter the score.  It's a huge win for us, and we'll try to keep the ride going against Concordia on Saturday."

The team's match against CACC rival Concordia College is set for Saturday, September 25 at 1:00 PM.  The game will be held at Watsessing Park.
