PHILADELPHIA, PA
(January 8, 2011) - The women's basketball team improved to a perfect 5-0 and 7-5 overall Saturday afternoon, as they ran their winning streak to three consecutive games with a 71-51 road victory over conference foe Chestnut Hill College.
The Lady Griffins were able to control the action in the first 20 minutes of play, matching Bloomfield bucket-for-bucket and building an 18-14 advantage 11 minutes into the period. But the Lady Deacons rallied with a 7-0 run of their own to grab their first lead of the day at 21-18. Chestnut Hill was able to keep pace the rest of the way, eventually knotting the score at 28 in the final minute of the half to send the two sides to the intermission deadlocked.
It appeared as if the Lady Deacons were on their way to the team's first CACC loss of the season in the opening stages of the second half, as a pair of Chestnut Hill threes in the opening minute put the home up 34-28. But Bloomfield stormed back with an emphatic 20-2 run, leaving the Lady Griffins in their wake and outscoring their counterparts 41-16 over the final 19 minutes to roll to the 20-point victory.
"We were able to rally with a big second half against a quality opponent today, which is always good to see," Bloomfield head coach Jerry Wimberly said. "We started out a little slow offensively, but we picked it up when it mattered and we were trailing. We got hit with the two threes early on in the second half, but our girls hung tough and weathered the storm. We're off to a very good start in conference play, so hopefully we can keep it going heading into our matchup with Nyack next week."
Junior guard
Vanessa Lamison led the Lady Deacons in scoring for the third consecutive game, notching a game-high 19 points to go with six rebounds and five steals.
Dale Samuels posted the highest point total of her Bloomfield career, coming off the bench to drop 14 points and finish 9-10 from the free-throw line.
Robyn Burton continued her outstanding play off the bench as well, rounding out the double-figure scorers with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Deacons return to action Tuesday, January 11 with a CACC North Division road test against Nyack College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
