BLOOMFIELD, NJ
(January 6, 2011) - The women's basketball team improved to 6-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in CACC play Thursday night, outscoring the Dominican College Lady Chargers 30-19 in the second half to take a 61-49 home decision.
Dominican's vaunted long-range attack came out scorching in the opening minutes, as the visitors' three guards connected on four threes in the first five minutes of the contest to give the Lady Chargers a 12-8 advantage. But each time their North Division rivals would attempt to pull away with another flurry of threes, the Lady Deacons would weather the storm, keeping Dominican within striking distance and eventually overtaking their counterparts with 2:29 to play. Bloomfield would remain in front heading into the break, clinging to a 31-30 lead at halftime.
It would be their slimmest lead of the night, as a switch in defensive schemes during the intermission allowed the Lady Deacons to neutralize Dominican's perimeter scoring and allow them to widen the gap to as many as 10 points with 14 minutes remaining. The Lady Chargers were limited to just 30% shooting from beyond the arc and 26% shooting from the field in the second half, truly a dominant defensive performance for the North Division's top club as they cruised to their fourth double-digit victory in conference play.
"Tonight was another big win for us," Bloomfield head coach Jerry Wimberly said. "Dominican has great three-point shooters, but we were able to make some adjustments at halftime to slow them down. The girls really responded in the second half, and we were able to get the victory. Hopefully we can keep it rolling as we head into the weekend."
Junior guard
Vanessa Lamison continued her breakout junior campaign in the victory, dropping 16 points while pulling down nine rebounds and swiping five steals. Center
Tiffany McDaniel was a force in the frontcourt, tallying 13 points and pulling down six rebounds.
Robyn Burton continued her outstanding play in reserve, netting 12 points in 34 minutes of action. Lindsey Lopez led all scorers for Dominican, notching a game-high 26 points. Dominican falls to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in CACC play with the loss.
The Lady Deacons return to action Saturday, January 8 with a road contest against South Division foe Chestnut Hill College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
