ORANGE, N.J. (October 15, 2011) - Bloomfield's men's soccer team fell to 6-6-1 overall in heart-breaking fashion Saturday afternoon, as they came up on the short end of a 5-4 double-overtime decision against conference rival Wilmington University at Orange Park. The loss drops the Deacons to 4-3-1 in CACC play.
Known as one of the top rivalries in the league, the two sides lived up to the billing in a wild 112-minute affair. Bloomfield senior forward
Terry Gibbs (London, England) orchestrated a brilliant stretch of play that has become customary for one of the top strikers in the nation with a goal in the 13th minute off an
Edgar Aguilar (Bayonne, N.J.) feed. Gibbs pushed the lead to 2-0 on another assist from Aguilar in the 38th minute, and completed his third hat trick in five matches with a tally just one minute later, putting Bloomfield on top 3-0 and giving Aguilar his third assist of the day.
Juan Ramirez (Medellin, Columbia) finished the Deacons' flurry in the 44th minute, burying a feed from Gibbs to put the home team up 4-0 heading into intermission.
It would prove to be a tale of two halves, however, as the Wildcats stormed back with four unanswered goals over the final 45 minutes of regulation to send the thrilling match to extra time. Eddie Kowalo got Wilmington on the board in the early stages of the period, while Manny Payton headed in a cross off a corner kick opportunity to cut the lead to 4-2 with 38 minutes to play. A costly turnover by Bloomfield's back line yielded a goal in the 37th minute by Mike Lewis to bring the lead to a single goal, and Tom Quaranta completed the improbable comeback with a tally in the 43rd minute knot the match at four and force a ten-minute overtime period.
After a scoreless opening stanza, it would prove to be the Wildcats who netted the golden goal, notching their fifth-straight tally 90 seconds into the second overtime off a shot from Kresimir Nurnberger to send the Deacons home with a loss tough to swallow. Gibbs led the way with seven total points on the afternoon, the senior now leading the CACC in goals (13) and total points (31) 13 matches into the 2011 campaign.
Bloomfield returns to action Tuesday, October 18 with a road match against CACC rival Caldwell College. Start time for the contest is set for 3:30 PM.
