BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (November 30, 2011) - Three Bloomfield players totaled at least 20 points to help give the team its highest point total of the season Wednesday night, as the men's basketball team improved to 3-4 overall with a 95-82 home victory over non-conference opponent the University of Bridgeport. Visiting Bridgeport fell to 3-4 with the loss.
The Deacons' attack came out firing on all cylinders in the early going, orchestrating a 23-13 spurt over the first eight minutes of the contest to grab a quick double-digit advantage. Bridgeport would weather the early storm and fight back with a run of their own, ripping off a 15-3 burst to take a 28-26 lead with 7:16 to go in the frame. A half that featured three ties and six lead changes would ultimately go to the home team, as the Deacons outscored the Purple Knights 7-5 over the final 2:44 of the period to take a slim 43-41 lead into the break.
Bridgeport would prove unable to maintain the furious pace set by Bloomfield's run-and-gun style in the second half, however, as the Deacons shot 53% from the floor and 43% from beyond the arc to take commanding control of the contest. Tied at 50 with 13:58 to play, the home team would execute the definitive run of the night, scoring 20 of the next 26 points to take a sizable 70-56 lead with 7:32 remaining. The Deacons cruised the rest of the way, picking up their third victory in their last four contests and moving to within a game of .500 on the year.
"Tonight was a good game for us offensively," Bloomfield head coach
Gerald Holmes said. "We can see now what we are capable of on that end of the floor, so hopefully that is something we can build off of as we move into our conference schedule."
Senior forward
Matt Wafula (Harlem, N.Y.) led the charge in the victory, totaling 21 points and six rebounds.
Ahmad Harris (Linden, N.J.) posted another brilliant performance, netting 20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals, while
Terry Hicks (Neptune, N.J.) totaled 20 points and three steals. Freshman guard
Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) tallied 12 points in reserve, to go with three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Bloomfield returns to action Saturday, December 3, when they travel to nearby North Division rival Caldwell College to open their CACC schedule. Tip-off for the contest is set for 3:00 PM.
