Deacons win sixth straight, top Saint Anselm 70-62

BOX SCORE

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (December 30, 2011) -
Four of Bloomfield's five starters reached double-figures in scoring Friday afternoon, as the men's basketball team improved to 9-5 overall with a 70-62 home victory over non-conference opponent Saint Anselm College.  The win extends the Deacons' winning streak to six consecutive games, their longest string of victories in the 2011-2012 season.

Entering the contest 5-1 in the month of December, the Deacons set the pace in the early going, engineering a 9-2 run to take a 25-17 lead with 4:22 remaining in the first half.  The visiting Hawks would remain within striking distance, closing the gap to five with a bucket as time expired to trail Bloomfield 33-28 at the intermission.

Saint Anselm would continue to gain momentum in the second half, clawing their way back into the contest and overtaking the Deacons to grab a 52-51 lead with 7:22 remaining.  But Bloomfield's balanced attack would prove to be too much for the Hawks to overcome, as the home team outscored their counterparts 19-10 the rest of the way to pick up the hard-fought victory.  The Hawks could not muster a final late-game push, giving the Deacons their ninth victory of the season and moving the club to 6-4 in non-conference games on the year.

Senior forward Matt Wafula (Harlem, N.Y.) led the Bloomfield offense with 17 points and two blocks, while rookie guard Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) netted 14 points and four assists in the victory.  Point guard Ahmad Harris (Linden, N.J.) posted nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Terry Hicks (Neptune, N.J.) finished with 13 points on the afternoon.  Sophomore forward Kevin Udo (West Orange, N.J.) tallied 11 points and nine rebounds in a solid frontcourt effort.

Bloomfield returns to action Tuesday, January 3 when they host CACC North Division rival Nyack College.  Tip-off for the contest is set for 8:00 PM.
