Back on track: Deacons storm past Dominican 78-69

ORANGEBURG, NY (February 3, 2011) - The men's basketball team improved to 11-7 overall and 8-2 in CACC play Thursday evening, as they swept their season series with the Dominican College Chargers in a 78-69 road victory.

After seeing their 31-game home winning streak snapped in their previous outing, the Deacons fell behind early after a quick 6-0 Dominican run opened the scoring.  But Bloomfield would quickly counter with a 9-2 run of their own to grab a one-point lead, settling into the seesaw battle that would ensue for the majority of the opening half.  Neither side could break away in the first 20 minutes of play, with Dominican clinging to a 28-27 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the period.  But the high-powered Deacons offense finally erupted, ripping off a 13-0 run to close the half and take commanding 40-28 lead to the intermission.

Bloomfield would not look back, despite a spirited effort by their North Division counterparts to pull off the come-from-behind victory.  Dominican was able to move to within as little as five points in the second half, but each time they would move to within striking distance the Deacons would answer with a counterpunch of their own.  The comeback effort proved to be fruitless, with Bloomfield preserving the lead and never trailing in the final 20 minutes as they earned the hard-fought road win and a season sweep of the Chargers.

Junior point guard Ahmad Harris turned in a trademark performance in the win, posting 12 points, a team-high 14 rebounds, six assists and four steals.  Gage Daye netted 19 points, while Ryan Rodrigues rounded out the perimeter scoring with 11.  Mike Williams and Kevin Udo rounded out the Deacons in double-figures, each totaling 10 points to help control the paint in the win.

The team returns to action Saturday, February 5 with a road contest against CACC South Division foe Holy Family University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
