BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (September 28, 2011) - Bloomfield's men's soccer team moved to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play Wednesday evening, as they played CACC rival Dominican College to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the club's home opener at Foley Field.
A rematch of the 2010 CACC Tournament Final, the match remained scoreless through the first 45 minutes of play despite quality scoring chances for both clubs. The Chargers were able to finnally strike first in the 70th minute, when Jorge Zubillaga volleyed a cross from Matthew Shutter past Deacons keeper
Daniel Hyde (East Orange, N.J.) to put the visitors on top 1-0.
The lead would prove to be short-lived, though, as Bloomfield engineered a strike of their own just four minutes later to even the contest. Sophomore midfielder
Claude Allen (Kingston, Jamaica) finished a cross from
Juan Ramirez (Medellin, Columbia) to knot the match at one in the 75th minute, setting the stage for yet another nail-biting conclusion in one of the league's best rivalries.
Neither club proved able to engineer the game-winner in regulation, sending the contest to a ten-minute overtime period. The Deacons were granted a golden opportuntity to secure the marquee victory five minutes into extra time, when a Dominican foul in the penalty area awared Bloomfield a penalty kick opportunity. But senior forward
Terry Gibbs (London, England) was stopped by Chargers keeper Brandon Heembrock on both the initial attempt and his rebound try, keeping the match even and contuing play. The chance would be the closest either side would come to netting the golden goal, as a second 10-minute overtime also yielded a scoreless outcome, giving each side a hard-fought point in the conference regular season standings.
The Deacons outshot Dominican 24-14 on the night, and held a 9-5 corner kick advantage. Gibbs paced the offense with nine total shots, while
Edgar Aguilar (Bayonne, N.J.) tallied three shots on goal. Hyde made seven saves in net in the draw.
"We had some chances to get a victory tonight, so that will make this one tough to swallow," Bloomfield head coach
Peter-John Falloon said. "We still get the point, and we played very well against a quality opponent. We have turned our play around over these last two matches, and now we just need to keep it going as the conference schedule moves forward."
Bloomfield returns to action Saturday, October 1 with a road match against CACC foe Concordia College. Kickoff is set for Noon.
