Lady Deacons outlast Georgian Court in triple-overtime thriller

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (December 8, 2012) - Rookie guard Ariel Wilson (Chesapeake, Va.) led five double-figure scorers with a career-high 24 points, nine rebounds, five assists and seven steals Saturday afternoon, as the Bloomfield College women's basketball team improved to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play with a 83-76 triple-overtime road victory over CACC rival Georgian Court University.

The visitors were able to jump out to a big lead to begin the contest, engineering a 23-10 run to put Georgian Court in a significant hole in the early stages of the afternoon.  Bloomfield would take a 30-23 lead into the second half, but an 11-0 run by the Lions erased the cushion and knotted the score at 34-34 with 10:09 remaining in regulation.  Neither side would lead by more than four points over the remainder of the half, with the Lady Deacons taking a 55-54 lead with 18 seconds to play in the period on a pair of free-throws by junior guard Ivettlis Castro (Carteret, N.J.).  A Bloomfield foul would send Georgian Court's Ebony Sellers to the free-throw line with six seconds remaining, giving the home team a chance to win the game in the final seconds.  But Sellers would only connect on one of her two attempts from the charity stripe, tying the score at 55 and forcing overtime after a three by Bloomfield's Wilson drew iron as time expired.

Georgian Court appeared ready to cap the comeback effort and pick up the victory in the first five-minute overtime, mounting a 63-59 advantage with just over one minute remaining in the period.  But a three by Castro trimmed the lead to a single point with 47 seconds to play, and a free-throw by Dre'Shonda Williams (Piscataway, N.J.) knotted the score at 63 with 32 seconds left.  A pair of Georgian Court free-throws put the Lions back on top by a bucket, but a steal by Bloomfield rookie Nahja Carter (Neptune, N.J.) resulted in a game-tying layup by Wilson with just five ticks remaining, forcing a second overtime in dramatic fashion and tying the score at 65.

A second five-minute overtime could not decide the winner, with neither team leading by more than three points in the frame.  A jumper by Castro went by the boards as time expired, forcing a third overtime period with the score tied at 71.  It would prove to be the decisive period in the marathon affair, as the Lady Deacons scored six of the frame's first seven points to grab a 77-72 lead to put the Lions on the ropes.  Bloomfield led the rest of the way, capping the team's third conference victory of the season and moving the club to three games over .500 for the first time this season with the seven-point win.

Wilson finished her career day 7-14 from the field and 10-18 from the free-throw line, while Carter totaled 10 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and a game-high 8 steals in a double-double effort.  Senior forward Shaniqua Bacote (Paterson, N.J.) totaled 11 points and eight rebounds to lead the frontcourt attack, while fellow senior Williams finished with 11 points off the bench.  Castro rounded out the double-figure scorers, totaling 10 points off the bench.

Bloomfield returns to action Saturday, December 15, when they take on non-conference opponent The College of Saint Rose in a home matchup.  Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
