BEARS WIN AN EMOTIONAL SENIOR DAY IN STRAIGHT SETS OVER DOMINICAN

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bloomfield College women's volleyball team swept the visiting Chargers of Dominican College 3-0, Saturday afternoon as the program celebrated 'Senior Day'. The Bears notched their second-consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory and registered identical set scores of 25-17 for all three sets.
 
In a great display of sportsmanship, prior to beginning their own festivities Bloomfield honored seniors #1 Angela Kim (Marlton, N.J.), #3 Kera Dexter (Selah, Wash.), #16 Emily Diaz (Orange, N.J.) and #42 Cortney Yeoman (Glenn Dale, Md.) from Dominican College. The Bears then shined a bright light on their 11 seniors including a heartfelt video-message all the way from Hawaii.
 
#23 Edmarie Freytes originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico was first to be honored. Freytes is a second year transfer from Monroe College, and she immediately made an impact in the CACC leading the conference in Aces Per Set last season. Edmarie will be graduating in the spring with a degree in business. Her high school club coach from Puerto Rico, Isreal Delgado and his wife made the trip to help recognize Freytes.
 
 
#11 Valerie Bermudez was next player also hailed from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Valarie is a second year transfer from Laredo College in Texas. Valerie earned First team All-CACC in her first season as a Bloomfield College player. This season she is currently averaging 3 kills and over 3 digs per set, as well as 3rd in the CACC for Aces Per Set. She will be graduating with a degree in Applied Sciences. The Carillo-Bermudez family made the trip all the way from Puerto Rico to help honor Valerie.
 
#13 Naya Paulino, a local product from Paterson, New Jersey is a two-year player from Passaic County College. As soon as she stepped foot on the court she was a defensive force at the net. She led the CACC and the East Region in blocks per set, earning her a second team all-conference award last season. She remains at the top of the conference in blocks per set and hitting percentage. She will be graduating in the spring with a degree in psychology and her parents were in attendance to help recognize her.
 
#9 Alex Glasper a South Jersey native from Rancocas Valley Regional High School, was a three-year player who earned a spot on the Second Team All-Conference last year, as well as being a recipient of the All-Academic award twice during her tenure at Bloomfield College. Alex currently has a GPA of 3.98 and will be completing a 5-year program in only 3 years, graduating in the spring with a degree in Business. The Glasper family made the trip up the Garden State Parkway to help honor Alex.
 
 
#10 Kourtney-Leigh Naki came to Bloomfield from University Laboratory High School in Hawaii. The four-year player contributed to the program in many different positions on the court. Kourtney-Leigh is known as the prankster of the team. She currently serves as a Resident Advisor and will be graduating in the spring with a degree in business. Kourtney-Leigh's family sent a tear-jerking special video message from back home in Hawaii.
 
#16 Rachael Neilan, another local product from Science Park High School in Newark, New Jersey, has been played under the direction of Coach Martinez since she was a freshman in high school. The four-year player has been a 3-time All-Academic CACC award recipient, and was also featured with a Bloomfield College Portrait of Excellence honor. With a current GPA of 3.98, She will be graduating in the spring with a degree in Math Education. Her family joined the Bears today to help recognize her.
 
#3 Caitlyn Naylor came to Bloomfield from Tacoma, Washington where she attended Gig Harbor High School. The four-year player has been a crucial part of the programs current success, serving as the ultimate teammate. Caitlyn will be studying abroad in Spain during the spring semester, and will be graduating with a degree in psychology. All the way from the state of Washington to help recognize her, the Naylor Family joined us in attendance.
 
 
#6 Paola Acosta hailed from Caguas, Puerto Rico, where she attended Nuestra Senora del Carmen High School. Acosta has played Right Side during her tenure as a Bloomfield College Player. She is also a 3-time recipient of the CACC All-Academic award. During the last 2 years, Paola has maintained a 4.0 GPA and will be graduating next month with a degree in history. Paola's boyfriend Felipe helped us to recognize her.
 
#12 Elizabeth (lIZZY) Meyer was the next player honored and came to the Bears from Otsego, MN, where she attended Rogers High School. Lizzy has been a four-year starter at middle and right side, and has been a major contributor to the program. She is jokingly known as the "klutz" of the team.  In the spring she will be graduating with a degree in communications. Her parents, Betty and Don Meyer made the trip from Minnesota to be with us to help honor Lizzy.
 
#7 Samantha Rios hails from Juncos, Puerto Rico, where she attended Jose Collazo Colon High School. Rios is currently serving as one of the Bears team captains.  This third-year player has been named 1st team All-CACC last season, and earlier this year reached 1,500 career digs. Coach Martinez refers to her as the silent ninja, and Sam will be graduating in the spring with a degree in psychology with honors. Sam's mom, Madeline Nieves and her husband made the trip from Puerto Rico to help us recognize her.
 
#8 Jackie Madlock came to us from Alta Loma, California, where she attended Alta Loma High School. Madlock is currently serving as a 2nd year captain for the Bears and has been a starting setter during her tenure as a Bloomfield College Player. Earlier this season she reached 2,000 assists for her career in a game against AIC and is currently sitting on 2,439. Jackie is a two-time CACC All-Academic award recipient and a McNair Scholarship award recipient. She will be graduating with a degree in Psychology with high honors. Fresh off a flight from California, her parents Leon and Marcella Madlock were in attendance to help us recognize Jackie.
   
In an unprecedented all-senior box score Valerie Bermudez notched 14 kills and 8 digs while Paola Acosta had a solid 7 kills for the afternoon. The trio of Madlock, Freytes and Naylor recorded 17, 12 and 7 assists respectively while Rios led the Bears with a team-high, 11 digs. Paulino chipped in a game-high five blocks and Naki poured in 10 digs and 6 kills on the festive day.
 
The Bears finish their regular season with a second straight 20-win output under Coach Martinez and earned their third consecutive trip to the CACC Tournament. Bloomfield will enter post-season play with the #2 seed in the North Division and an opportunity to host the first round match-up.
 
The opening round gets underway on Tuesday, November 15 when the Bears welcome the #3 seeded Tigers of Holy Family University at the Bloomfield College Gym.  The game is set to start at 7:00 pm and a full update of the Tournament schedule, seedings and game times will follow later on this weekend.
