BLOOMFIELD, NJ – Keith Washington (Philadelphia, P.A) scored the 1,000th point of his collegiate career Sunday but it was not enough to help the Bears overtake The University of New Haven as they suffered a, 77-61 setback to close out 2018. The final non-conference game of the season dropped Bloomfield to 4-7 for the year while the visiting Chargers improved to 6-4 after the victory in The Den.
Washington, who scored 326 points in his first two seasons at NCAA Div I, Rice University, had a monster year last season when he scored 531 points and helped the Bears to the NCAA Div II Tournament East Region Final. He entered Sunday's match up with the Chargers needing only seven points to achieve the career milestone.
New Haven had plans of their own and came out shooting a blistering, 53.3 percent from the field, which included, 7-of-14 from beyond the arc and captured a 42-25 lead at halftime. Washington had five points in the opening half and needed only one bucket as the teams exited the locker rooms for the second period.
A drive to the basket on Bloomfield's opening possession would earn the senior guard his career milestone as the runner floated through the air and into the basket to cut the home team's deficit momentarily. The Chargers mission remained unchanged however and they ballooned their lead to twenty-six (64-38) with just over eleven minutes left to play.
The home team had very few answers for New Haven's hot shooting and settled for going bucket-for-bucket down the stretch as the contest concluded. Washington finished his milestone day with 7 points while the Bears top-scorer this season, Kavione Green (Amityville, NY), dropped 16 points to go along with 8 boards. Freshman, Jahaud Lowber (Deptford, NJ) provided a spark off the bench with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor, along with a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.
With the non-conference part of their regular season concluded, Bloomfield will now focus their attention on Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action in 2019 when they host Concordia College on Wednesday, Jan 2. The league battle with the Clippers is set for a 7:30 pm tip-off in The Den.
