BEARS SCORE FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON IN CACC SPLIT WITH THE WILDCATS

NEW CASTLE, DEL – The softball team picked up their first win of 2018 during a split Saturday afternoon against Wilmington University. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener featured Bloomfield taking Game 1, 7-4 and the Wildcats coming back to take Game 2, 5-0. Both teams ended the day, 1-1 in CACC action, with the Bears sporting a 1-7 overall record and Wilmington sitting at 12-6 overall.

"Game one was exciting. We hung in there and never quite felt the game was out of reach at any point," commented Head Coach, Ashton Corley. " We were just a clutch hit away for most of the innings and we finally broke through later in the game. We constantly talk about 'the process' as a team and I think Saturday was proof that when we do trust the process, we will be successful."

Kiersten Coho (East Freedom, Pa) got the start in Game 1 and gave up 3 runs, all earned in 4 and a third innings of work, striking out three and giving up eight hits. Coach Corley made a move in the fourth and brought junior transfer, Lauren Booth (Maple Shade, NJ) into the circle from right field to finish up the game. The Bears bats finally came alive in the 6th inning as the team erupted for 7 points to put the home team on their heels, 7-3. Wilmington clawed back a run in the bottom of the frame but Booth held on for her first victory as a Bear.

Sophomore catcher, Alexis Freudenburg (Islip, NY) had a career game, going 2-of-4 at the plate with 2 RBI and the first stolen base of her collegiate career. Classmate, Delanie Cruz (Chicago, IL) and freshman Jarae Keli'ikoa (Wahiawa, HI) also had 2 hits each in Game 1 and Bloomfield posted 12 hits in the contest.

Game 2 proved to be a little different with the Wildcats seeking redemption and shut out the Bears on the scoreboard. "Even with a 5-0 score in game two, I think we improved and learned from it," mentioned Corley. "That is our goal, learning and growing each game. We definitely are looking forward to getting back to work Monday and prepping for our next match up." Maddie Feddersen (Islip, NY) picked up the loss in the second game, the second of the season for the freshman as she went, three-and a-third innings, giving up 5 runs on 8 hits.

Bloomfield will be back in action on Tuesday with another CACC road trip. Dominican College rolls out the welcome mat for a league double-dip starting at 3:00 pm in Orangeburg.
