BEARS DROP TWO ON THE ROAD TO OPEN 2018 VOLLEYBALL SEASON

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.– The Bloomfield College volleyball team began their 2018 season with a couple of non-conference setbacks on the road Thursday afternoon at the ESU Tri-Match. The Bears dropped the first match of the season, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-21) to the tri-match hosts, East Stroudsburg and then fell, 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-16) to the Mavericks from Mercy College.

In the first match of the day, Bloomfield saw sophomore Libero, Junelly Marrero (Las Vegas, Cantano, Puerto Rico) post a career-high, 22 digs against the Warriors. The Bears had six new players take the court for the first time in a Bloomfield uniform, led by freshman, Jakara Henry (Houston, TX) with five kills and junior transfer, Juliette Tygret (Gilbert, AZ) with nine assists.

Junior, Danielle Quintanar (El Paso, TX) had a team-high seven kills against ESU to go along with nine digs but the Warriors battled for a 45-21 advantage in kills to seal their first win of 2018. Bloomfield held an edge in defense at the net with an 8-4 margin fueled by four blocks from sophomore, Ashley Stroot (Rolesville, NC) and two from freshman, Destiny King (Williamstown, NJ).

With one match under their belt, the Bears wasted no time getting into their second battle of the afternoon and took to the court against Mercy. Bloomfield built a 16-14 lead in Set 1 before the Mavericks galloped back with an, 8-1 answer to go up, 22-17 and eventually took the first frame. 

Henry notched a career-high, nine kills to lead the Bears for the match and recorded three blocks at the net. Tygret paced the offense with 23 assists and chipped in 11 digs. Junior, Delanie Cruz (Chicago, IL) also registered 11 digs for Bloomfield, who served as the home team in Match 2 while Marrero added 15 digs to her total for the day.

The Bears next action on the court comes Saturday, September 1 when they head to the Long Island Invitational for another tri-match. In a 3:00 pm showdown they will face the Dolphins from LeMoyne College and then at 7:00 pm Bloomfield will square off with the Pioneers of LIU Post.
