BLOOMFIELD, NJ – The Bloomfield College men's basketball team opened up 2020 at home hosting the Spartans from Saint Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) and dropped a 69-58 decision at The Den. The Thursday night setback against the top-ranked team in the region moved the Bears overall record to 6-7. The Spartans improved to 11-2 with the non-conference win on the road.
The Bloomfield offense sputtered out of the gate, as the team shot just 24.0 percent from the field in the first half. The Spartans weren't too far ahead at 31.03 percent from the field but seized the opportunity and took a 26-19 advantage into the locker room.
The beginning of the 2nd half was an epic back-and-forth battle with Bloomfield drawing to within two (55-53) with 3:25 remaining on the clock. STAC closed the doors on the home team's comeback hopes with a quick 8-0 run in the span of a minute-twenty seconds and held on for the hard-fought win to begin the new year.
Safee Abdus-Sabur (Newark, NJ) turned in team-highs of 17 points and 9 rebounds while Rich Chapman (Newark, NJ) chipped in 16 points to the Bears effort. The tandem were the Bears only double-digit scorers as Tony Godwin (North Plainfield, NJ) added 8 points in just 13 minutes of work off the bench.
Bloomfield will step back onto the court this Saturday, January 2, for their next challenge, squaring off with Wilmington University. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on the road is scheduled for a 3:00 pm start.
