Deacons take Alaska Fairbanks Invitational, top Dominican 85-80

Daye tabbed Tournament MVP

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA:  The men's basketball team concluded their trip to Alaska with an 85-80 victory over CACC rival Dominican College in the final of the Alaska Fairbanks Invitational, giving the Deacons the tournament victory with a 2-1 record in the event.

A seesaw battle that saw the score tied eight times, the Deacons were able to outlast the Chargers in large part due to the 52 points the Deacons scored in the paint.  The Chargers were able to overcome a first half in which the Deacons defense held them to just 35% shooting in the opening frame, still holding a slim 38-36 advantage through one half of play.  But the Deacons offense caught fire in the second half, shooting 56% from the floor and connecting on 13 of 15 second half free-throws to preserve the lead, and hold on for the five-point victory.

Junior guard Gage Daye paced the offense for Bloomfield, going for a game-high 29 points on 11-20 shooting, his performances over the weekend good enough to earn him the Alaska Fairbanks Invitational Tournament MVP.  Chris Sampson was solid inside, going for 14 points and pulling down six rebounds.  Matt Wafula was a major contributor off the bench for the Deacons, notching 12 points and six rebounds in the win.

The team returns to action Tuesday, November 24 with a game against Dowling College.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
