Deacons earn first victory with shutout of STAC

Defense, team effort keys to 2-0 win

You could see the improvement every time Coach Falloon's group took to the pitch.  Each game they have grown more confident, more in sync, and played with a team chemistry that has only increased as the season has progressed.  But as quickly as the flashes came, they were gone just fast, the group unable to put together a complete effort for 90 minutes.

But It all came together Tuesday afternoon, when outstanding defense and an excellent outing from keeper Steven Alonso keyed the Deacons' first win of the 2009 campaign, coming in the form of a 2-0 shutout of St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Bloomfield dominated possession from the opening whistle, and the defensive unit was on point from the game's first minute.  The Spartans could only get ten shots away over the 90 minute affair, with only six finding their way on net for Alonso to turn aside..  With the defensive end of the field held more than in check, the offense was free to go to work, and they made quick work of getting the club a lead they would never relinquish.

In just the 11'th minute, forward Evans Tageo swiped a STAC goal kick and fired a shot that found the back of the net, giving his team a 1-0 cushion.  The score would remain that way for the next 78 minutes, with the Spartans' offense nonexistent due to outstanding Deacons defense.  Jason Bryan added a goal in the 90'th minute to put the game on ice, securing the club's first victory of the 2009 campaign.

"I was extremely happy with the defense today," Bloomfield head coach Peter Falloon  said.  "Today was our best 'team' effort of the season.  We have been very good at points in games, but we haven't been able to concentrate for 90 minutes.  We were able to do that today.  Our defense was outstanding, and our goalie had a good game as well.  I am very happy for the guys; they had a great team effort today."

The group hits the pitch again Saturday, September 19, with a match against Concordia College.  The opening whistle is set for 1:00 PM.
