PHILADELPHIA, PA - The men's soccer team improved to 9-1 on the season Saturday afternoon, overpowering the Holy Family University Tigers 3-1 in a road CACC contest. The win moved the Deacons, currently ranked 18'th in the nation and first overall in the East region to a perfect 7-0 in conference play.
The 14-day layoff proved to have little affect on the high-powered Deacons offense, with Coach Falloon's squad taking a 1-0 lead just five minutes and 15 seconds into the contest. Senior forward
Dwayne Reid finished a feed from
Triston Sommerville to put Bloomfield up a goal, but the club's forwards didn't stop there.
Terry Gibbs, the club's leading scorer, notched his eighth goal of the season with a tally in the ninth minute, giving the Deacons a 2-0 lead in the blink of an eye.
It was a dominant performance by the CACC's top team as the Deacons outshot the Tigers 25-9, with the club's back line yielding just three shots on goal. A penalty kick that was converted by Holy Family's Jason Lopez was the only blemish on the day for the region's best group, which brought the Tigers to within a goal in the 56'th minute. But Gibbs would put the game away with his second strike of the match, finishing a pass from
Edwin Ventura in the 74'th minute to ice the 3-1 victory.
"I was very pleased with the way we played today," head coach
Peter-John Falloon said. "A layoff that long can allow a team to get rusty and complacent, but our players came out ready to go and notched two quick goals. It didn't take long for us to get back into a rhythm offensively, which was good to see. We just need to keep it going and improve each day."
The team returns to action Tuesday, October 12 with a home match against non-conference opponent Bridgeport University. The opening whistle is set for 2:00 PM.
