Reid lifts Deacons in 3-2 overtime victory over Post

BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The men's soccer team picked up their 13th victory of the season in dramatic fashion Thursday afternoon, as senior Dwayne Reid's game-winner in the first overtime period propelled the Deacons to a 3-2 win over visiting Post University at Watsessing Park.  The dramatic victory moved Bloomfield to 10-0-1 in CACC play, the club wrapping up the regular season with an unblemished conference record.

The Deacons were able to get on the board in the 11th minute, when Reid engineered a brilliant run down the right sideline, leaving three Post defenders in his wake as he streaked into Post territory and served the ball into the box.  Junior forward Terry Gibbs was there waiting, and buried the feed to put Bloomfield on top 1-0.

The score would remain a one-goal advantage for Coach Falloon's squad through the remainder of the first half and until the 63rd minute, when Juan Ramirez punched in another Reid cross to put the Deacons on top 2-0.  It appeared as if the Deacons would cruise to a two-goal victory, but a late Post goal by Steven Vaz off an Eagles throw-in brought the visitors to within a goal in the 88'th minute.  Needing just two more minutes to hold on for the victory, Bloomfield yielded a corner kick with one second to play.  Towering Post defender Hylton Davis broke into the box and headed the feed to the back of the net, stunning the Bloomfield defense and sending the game to extra time.

But the Deacons would not let the game slip away, and capitalized on their best scoring chance of the overtime period with just 1:16 left to play.  After a Post yellow card, Ramirez fired the free kick on net from just outside the 18.  Post keeper Errol Reid couldn't corral the rebound, and Reid streaked in unmarked, putting the rebound in the back of the net and sending the Deacons seniors off in style with a thrilling one-goal victory.

"First, I'm very happy for our seniors, that we were able to win a game for them on Senior Day," head coach Peter-John Falloon said.  "We nearly gave the game away there at the end, but our guys did not give in.  We dug deep and got the game-winner, and that's something we can take with us as we enter the conference tournament."

The team returns to action Tuesday, November 2 with the opening round of the CACC Tournament.  The Deacons will host the opening round match, having secured the number one seed in the tournament.  The time and location of the game are to be determined.
