BLOOMFIELD, NJ (January 25, 2011) - The women's basketball team ran their winning streak to seven consecutive games and improved to a perfect 9-0 in conference play Tuesday night, as they cruised to an 84-45 victory over North Division rival Post University. The win moves the Lady Deacons to 11-5 overall, while post fell to 6-9 on the year and 4-5 in CACC action.
From the opening tip, Bloomfield's trademark defense suffocated the Lady Eagles' attack, limiting the visitors to just a pair of buckets through the first ten minutes of the opening frame. The superlative effort led to a 20-4 run to open the contest and the Lady Deacons never looked back, limiting Post to just 22% shooting from the field and tallying 41 points to take a 41-19 lead into the break.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the North Division's top club forced the Lady Eagles into 27 total turnovers and outscored their counterparts 43-26 in the second half to roll to their second-straight victory by an 84-45 margin. A complete effort on both sides of the ball, the brutally efficient Bloomfield attack finished the evening having connected on 46% of their field goal attempts and 43% of their shots from beyond the arc.
"Tonight was a good victory against a divisional opponent," Bloomfield head coach Jerry Wimberly said. "We were able to get some people involved, and were able to limit what they wanted to do defensively, so we did a lot of positive things. We're just trying to keep it rolling, but we'll certainly have a tough test this Saturday. We need to be ready to go."
Ivettlis Castro came off the bench to lead the Lady Deacons in scoring, finishing her evening 7-12 from the field and notching 17 points. The freshman point guard was one of four Bloomfield players in double figures, with
Vanessa Lamison and Dre'Shonda Williams tallying 14 points apiece. Lamison made her presence felt at both ends of the floor, tallying six steals and eight rebounds to go with four assists.
Shaniqua Bacote continued her rock-solid play in the post, totaling 10 points and six rebounds, while
Robyn Burton,
Shakiyrah Bishop and
Iliriana Lulgjuraj notched eight points apiece to round out the balanced onslaught.
Bloomfield returns to action Saturday, January 29 with a home matchup against CACC South Division foe Goldey Beacom College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
