BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bloomfield College men's basketball team improved to 12-11 overall and 10-5 in conference in come-from-behind fashion Tuesday night, as they capped a seesaw game with a spectacular 25-4 run over the final seven minutes en route to an 80-75 home victory over CACC North Division rival Post University.
The Deacons came out firing on all cylinders from the opening tip, as junior point guard
Dondre Whitmore (Trenton, N.J.) connected on Bloomfield's first three shots of the game - all threes - to give the home team a quick 9-0 advantage. The lead would balloon to as many as 14 points in the half, with the Deacons shooting 5-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play to maintain a double-digit lead for much of the period. The Eagles would weather the hot shooting start, however, trimming the lead to single digits and trailing by just seven points at 38-31 heading into the intermission.
Post would maintain momentum and set the pace in the beginning of the final frame, erasing the deficit and taking a 41-40 lead after a 10-2 run to begin the half. Junior guard Zach Krischer led the Eagles back into the game, staging a brilliant second-half shooting performance and hitting 5-of-6 threes over an eight-minute span to turn the tide in favor of the visitors. The Eagles would outscore Bloomfield 40-17 over the first 13 minutes of the half, mounting a sizable 71-55 lead with just under seven minutes to play.
But on a night of haymakers and counter punches, the Deacons struck with the decisive blow of the evening, staging an epic late-game comeback for one of the club's signature victories of the season. Sophomore shooting guard
Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) began the Bloomfield run with a three-point play after a Post University foul, and seven consecutive points by the duo of
Matt Hall (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Clarence White (Bronx, N.Y.) quickly trimmed the lead to 71-64 with 5:18 remaining. Enter Whitmore, who scored five straight points - including a clutch three that ignited the Bloomfield faithful - to bring the deficit to a single bucket at 73-71 with 3:49 left.
The point guard struck again two possessions later, slicing through the Post defense for a layup that would put the Deacons on top for good at 75-73. Bloomfield would limit the Eagles to just a pair of buckets over the final seven minutes of the contest, locking down the Post attack on the defensive end and forcing the visitors into a 2-for-11 shooting performance the rest of the way to key the late-game rally. The club would close out the tremendous 25-4 run from the free-throw line, capping a wild night with a pivotal victory and all but assuring a home playoff game in the CACC Quarterfinals with a come-from-behind win over the third-place Eagles.
Williams led all Bloomfield scorers with 18 points on the night, going 8-of-9 from the free-throw line to help seal the victory. Whitmore's banner night finished with 16 points, with the floor general adding nine rebounds and five assists in a standout all-around effort. Hall added 16 points of his own for the Deacons in the victory, while junior forward
Kevin Udo (West Orange, N.J.) notched his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Bloomfield returns to action Saturday, February 16, when they travel to take on the University of the Sciences in a late-season CACC matchup. Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
