NYACK, NY - Senior guard
Steve Henderson (West Orange, NJ) made it rain from beyond 3-pt range as he went 10-for-12 to score a career best and game high 30 points in Bloomfield's 81-50 victory over the Warriors of Nyack College. The rainy weather outside the Bowman Gymnasium was just a mist in comparison to the exhibition put on by Henderson which caused even the Warrior faithful to cheer on the Deacon in the later stages of the game. The victory moved Bloomfield College to 6-1 in CACC action while dropping Nyack to 3-5 in conference play.
The storyline of the afternoon was Henderson's sharp-shooting ability, putting in duplicate performances in both halves, going 5-for-6 from the field and all from beyond arc. Steve's first 3-pointer came at the 15:39 minute mark as he put the Deacons up 9-4. His next 3-pt shot would fall at the 4:30 mark with Bloomfield in control of the battle over the Warriors, 31-16. Henderson would close out the half with 3 consecutive buckets from beyond the arc on the Deacons last 3 possessions and the Bloomfield fans were elated at the 44-22 halftime lead. Freshman forward
Carlo DeChavez (West Orange, NJ) chipped in 9 points off the bench in the first half solidifying the Deacons bench production outscoring Nyack's reserves 29-4 on the strength of the two West Orange, NJ natives.
Henderson's best outing as a Deacon before today came against Holy Family on January 28, 2012 when he went 5-for-11, scoring 17 points, so his first half performace surely seemed to put him in a position to possibly eclipse that mark however no one inside the Bowman Gymnasium could predict what would follow in the second stanza. Still in reserve duty, Steve entered the game and calmly hit his sixth 3-pointer with just under 11 minutes to play in the contest. The game firmly in hand, the Deacon sharp-shooter began to win over Warrior fans who cheered for him as he put up shots from well beyond the arc and scored Bloomfield's last 12 points of the game. All fans cheered with the teams showing great sportmanship after the game and sharing in a prayer at center court.
For Nyack, Nick Moore (Sicklerville, NJ) had a strong game, posting a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. DeChavez finished up the contest with 9 points and 7 rebounds while sophomore forward
Claude Blue (Brooklyn, NY) pitched in 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field for the Deacons. Bloomfield shot 51.0% from the field including a blistering 54.0% from beyond the arc paced by Henderson's performance.
The Deacons next challenge will come when they try to avenge their lone loss in CACC action against North Division standout, Dominican College on Tuesday, January 14th at 8:00PM. The Deacons Den will be rocking, if you can't be there, don't miss any of the action.
