Bloomfield, N.J. - The Bloomfield College volleyball team roared in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division match up Friday evening against the Chargers of Dominican College, 3-1 in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at the Bloomfield Gym. The victory moves the Bears to 13-10 on the season and 9-4 in CACC action while Dominican falls to 11-6 overall and 8-6 in CACC play.
In the first set Bloomfield battled point for point in the early going and had a 15-14 advantage after a kill and service ace from junior transfer Diannmarie Rivera (Trujillo Alto, P.R.). The Chargers responded with a side out on a kill from senior Kayla Dexter who went on to serve five straight points and Dominican enjoyed a 20-15 advantage. The Bears attempted a comeback but fell short as sophomore McKenzie John recorded a set-winning kill for the 25-21 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Bloomfield clawed their way back in, grabbing set two (25-22) and set three (25-17) and controlled the match 2-1 heading into the fourth set. The Bears crowd in attendance were on the edge of their seats after enjoying a serving contest to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness between sets two and three, they were eager to watch Bloomfield close out the contest with a win.
The Chargers had other plans entirely, jumping out of the gate to a 15-11 lead over Bloomfield before the Bears mounted a surge to tie the set at 18-18 on a kill by Rivera. Rivera would come thru again with another kill to knot the score up again, this time at 22-22. Dominican saw match point (24-22) on a service ace by John but the Bears wouldn't be denied on this night, roaring back with four straight points to take the set (26-24) and the match (3-1) in a conference marquee battle.
Rivera finished the game with a double-double, recording 10 digs and team-high 20 kills on the evening. Senior Deandra Black (Teaneck, N.J.) had 11 kills for the Bears and sophomore setter Jacquelyn Madlock (Alta Loma, C.A.) posted a game-high 41 assists.
On the Chargers side, John led all attackers with 27 kills and completed a double-double with 11 digs. The Dominican offense ran thru Kera Dexter who notched 26 assists for the match.
