QUEENS, NY - After tying a school record with 15 runs in their previous game, the Bloomfield College softball bats went cold as the Deacons were swept by East Coast Conference foe Queens College 3-1 and 7-0. Bloomfield managed just five hits in the doubleheader.
In game one, Bloomfield (9-5, 2-0 CACC) fell behind 1-0 early, but tied the game when
Angie Yoshizu (Kaneohe, HI) drove home
Shannon Brennan (Stafford, VA) in the top of the fourth. Meanwhile, freshman
Kirsten Wilson held Queens (9-5) at bay over the first four innings. The righty allowed just one hit, a solo home run, over that time and had four strike outs.
Queens finally got to Wilson for the deciding runs in the fifth. They loaded the baes on two infield singles and a flare over the outstretched arms of Yoshizu to load the bases. Wilson induced a pop up for the second out, but couldn't escape completely as Monique Roberge blooped a single to short center to score two runs.
Those would be all the runs that Queens would need as Bloomfield got just one baserunner, a single by
Aubrey Orr (Gallup, NM) over the final four innings.
Bloomfield's bats were even colder in game two as the Deacons managed just two hits against Roberge. The junior righty struck out nine of the first ten batters she faced to send a scoreless game to the bottom of the third.
Queens broke the game open there with five unearned runs off of Bloomfield's starter
Hailey Marini (Kunkletown, PA). The leadoff batter for Queens reached on an error, but Marini followed that with a strikeout. After a bunt single, Bloomfield committed yet abnother error to load the bases. Marini walked a batter to give Queens their first run and Roberge followed with a long grand slam to left center field to make the score 5-0.
Queens again took advantage of Bloomfield's miscues in the fifth when their leadoff batter walked to start the inning. An error on an infield grounder put runners at first and second and a passed ball moved each runner up a base. Roberge then delivered an RBI single to make the score 6-0.
In the sixth, Queens tacked on their final run on a double steal. Freshman catcher
Emily Ebaugh (Spokane, WA) threw out the lead runner at second and Yoshizu's return throw to home appeared to beat the runner. However, the Queens baserunner made an excellent play, leaping over Ebaugh to avoid the tag and score the team's seventh run.
Yoshizu and Marini had the only hits for Bloomfield in the game and the Deacons also managed five walks.
Marini (2-1) picked up the first loss of her career, allowing just on earned run over seven innings in the process.
Bloomfield is now off for three days before their home opener against CACC rival Holy Faimily this Saturday at 1:00pm, field conditions permitting.
