WILDCATS SWEEP BEARS SOFTBALL IN CACC ROAD OPENER

NEW CASTLE, DEL. – Junior Faith Apolskis (Soquel, Calif.) had three hits and three RBI including a two-run homer on the day but the Bloomfield College softball team were swept by Wilmington University, 10-4 and 5-4, Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field in Delaware.

The Bears opened their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) schedule after returning from Florida on Wednesday and fell behind in game one before surrendering in 11 innings in game two.

Bloomfield, up 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh with two outs saw a double to right center and a home run tie the game to force extra innings in Game 2. The Bears (5-8, 0-2 CACC) scored first in the top of the ninth after the international tiebreaker rule came into effect. Apolskis singled up the middle and scored Veronica Cobos (Torrance, Calif.) who had been placed on second but the Wildcats answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

The Bears threatened again in the 11th with the bases loaded and no outs but Apolskis grounded into a double play and Jamie Cook (Elkland, P.A.) flew out to right to end the threat. The Wildcats capitalized in the bottom of the frame with a walk-off single thru the left side for the win.

In Game one, the Wildcats jumped all over starter, Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, P.A.) with five runs in the 1st inning and the Bears found it hard to recover. Wilmington tacked on a run in the third for a 6-0 advantage before Bloomfield found an answer in the fourth inning.

The Bears cut into their deficit with a four run fourth after Melissa Yepez (Paramount, Calif.) singled to center with two outs. Lauren Bueno (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) reached on an error by the third baseman setting up Gabby Citriniti (Corning, N.Y.) who hit a laser to double to center field scoring both Yepez and Bueno. Apolskis stepped to the plate and crushed a shot to right field and pulled Blomfield to 6-4.

The Wildcats added two more runs in the home half to regain a comfortable 8-4 lead before closing out the scoring in the fifth inning with a two-run single off Citriniti who came on in relief.

Wilson (3-3) went four innings, giving up eight runs (all earned) on nine hits while striking out three in Game One. Citriniti pitched two innengs and surrendered two runs on two hits and struck out one while walking one.

Stephanie Miller (Temecula, Calif.) pitched the entire 11 innings of Game Two and gave up the five runs (three earned) while scattering 17 hits with one strikeout and two walks to move to 1-4 on the year.

The Bears open up at home tomorrow with a double-dip against non-conference foe, NYIT. The battle of the teams with Bear mascots is set to begin at 1:00 pm from Clarks Pond South in Bloomfield, N.J.
