BLOOMFIELD, N.J. - The Bloomfield College softball team split their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) home contests against the Clippers of Concordia College Wednesday evening at Clarks Pond South by the scores of 5-1 Bears in Game One and 3-2 Clippers in Game Two. The league doubleheader had been postponed from a day earlier due to inclement weather impairing the field conditions and spanned five and a half hours caused in part by a passing thunder shower in between games.
The Bears now sit at 7-10 overall and 1-3 in CACC action after
Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, P.A.) picked up the win on the mound in Game One and hit a home run in the bottom of the first inning. Concordia moved to 5-4 overall in 2016 and 1-1 in league play after handing the loss to
Stephanie Miller (Temecula, Calif.) in Game Two.
Wilson began the scoring with a shot into the trees in left field for her fourth home run of the season and with Bloomfield took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Concordia would knot things up at 1-1 in the top of the fourth as a two-out RBI single scored a run.
Â
The Bears went deep again in the bottom of the sixth as Bloomfield scored four runs, the first one on a solo shot to center by
Lauren Bueno (Hacienda Heights, Calif.). The next batter,
Jamie Cook (Elkland, P.A.) fouled a pitch off that struck her in the face and had to leave the game due to injury.
Mariah Frazier (Port Angeles, W.A.) substituted for Cook and drew a walk, followed by a single to center by
Gabby Citriniti (Corning, N.Y.) that set up a three-run blast to left by
Veronica Cobos (Torrance, Calif.) to make it a 5-1 advantage.
Â
Wilson held the Clippers in check as she pitched a complete game allowing just two hits while striking out six for her fifth win of the season.
Â
In the second game Miller took the mound and held Concordia scoreless across the first three innings of the delayed double-dip as a thunderstorm passed thru Clarks Pond and pushed the start time back an hour. Bloomfield took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third off a Citriniti sacrifice fly that scored Cobos from third.
Â
Concordia responded with the equalizer in the top of the fourth as a single with two outs in the inning, drove in a run and tied the score at 1-1.
Â
Neither team was able to score the go-ahead run through seven with Miller keeping the Clippers' offense at bay to force extra innings. In the top of the ninth, with the International Rule in effect, Concordia struck with a lone run to go up 2-1 but the Bears answered back with a run of their own in the home half of the inning, making it 2-2 heading into the tenth.
Â
Concordia once again pushed across a run in the top of the inning but Bloomfield squandered an opportunity in the bottom of the tenth with a runner on third and one out, but could not score as the Clippers took the 3-2 victory.
Â
Miller picked up the loss for the Bears after pitching the complete game and fell to 1-6 on the season.
Â
Next up, Bloomfield continues action in the CACC on Saturday, Mar 19 when they host USciences. The first pitch of the conference double header against the Devils is set for 1:00 pm at Clarks Pond South.
