BLOOMFIELD, NJ - For the first time since becoming an NCAA Division II program, Bloomfield College boasts a single men's basketball player winning both the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. Senior forward, Kavione Green (Amityvile, NY) was honored in an announcement Tuesday morning from the league office to mark this historic occasion. Also making history, the Bears skipper, Gerald Holmes was named the CACC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, a first for the 17-year architect on the Bloomfield sidelines. Tonight, Coach Holmes and the Bears begin their quest for their 8th CACC Championship in the last 15 years with a quarterfinal match up against Wilmington University. The Wildcats enter The Den as the #4 seed in the south division and are scheduled for a 6:00 pm tip-off with the north division's regular-season champions. NEW HAVEN, Conn. (March 5, 2019) - Bloomfield College standout Kavione Green on Tuesday was named the 2018-19 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Basketball Player and Defensive Player of the Year, as announced by Commissioner Dan Mara. Green, who was also named to the All-CACC First Team, highlighted a list of numerous award winners on Tuesday. Voting for the CACC Men's Basketball All-Conference and Major Awards was conducted by the league's 14 head coaches in the sport.
Joining Green as major award winners on Tuesday were Holy Family University's Patrick Robinson (CACC Rookie of the Year) and Bloomfield's Gerald Holmes (CACC Coach of the Year).
Green had a terrific all-around season in helping to lead Bloomfield to a 19-9 overall record during the regular season and a 17-2 mark in league play, as the Bears locked up the CACC North Division Championship and the No. 1 overall seed in this week's CACC Men's Basketball Championship.
He ranks sixth in the league in scoring at 19.3 points per game, while topping the CACC at 11.0 rebounds an outing. Green ranks second in the league in total points scored at 540. He also ranks in the top 10 in several other categories including steals (8th, 44), blocks (10th, 21), field goals made (3rd, 197), three-point field goals made (6th, 62) and three-point percentage (5th, 40.3%).
Robinson had a stellar debut season at the collegiate level in 2018-19, as he is averaging 18.9 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He ranks eighth in the league in scoring. Robinson scored in double-figures in all but one contest during the regular season and topped 20 points in 14 games. Robinson enters Tuesday's CACC quarterfinals with four-consecutive games of at least 20 points. Robinson was also named to the 2018-19 CACC Men's Basketball All-Conference Second Team.
Holmes was named the CACC Coach of the Year for guiding the Bears to the North Division crown. Bloomfield has won 10-straight games entering the postseason, as the Bears' strong regular season comes on the heels of the team advancing to the NCAA Division II East Region Championship Final in 2018.
The other major award handed out on Tuesday was Chestnut Hill College -- led by Head Coach Jesse Balcer -- winning the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award for demonstrating outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the 2018-19 campaign.
