Knights hold off late Deacons rally for 2-1 victory

A late offensive surge wasn't enough for the Deacons to overcome a two goal deficit in Wednesday's second half, as they fell to 0-3 on the season with a 2-1 loss to Queens College.

Each time they've taken the field the improvement in the Deacons' chemistry has been remarkable, and Wednesday's match was no different.  A turnover in the box proved costly in the 14'th minute, when Adam Maliniak headed the ball to the back of the net to open the match's scoring.  But the Deacon defense put the clamps down from then on, turning away each of the remaining 11 shots the Knights fired in the game's first 45 minutes.

The outstanding play of goalkeeper Steven Alonso kept the Deacons alive and the match a one-goal affair deep into the second half.  In just his third game with the Deacons, Alonso made 11 saves on the day, and along with the Deacons' defensive front allowed the squad to stay within striking distance.

But the Knights widened the gap to two when Akinyode Dele tucked the ball inside the left post for Queens' second goal of the game in the 65'th minute, leaving a sputtering Deacon offense with a tall order to knot the score in the final 25 minutes of play.

The front line finally caught a break in the 86'th minute, when Edwin Ventura put an Evans Tageo pass in the back of the net to cut the lead to a single goal.  But the final whistle came too soon for a final scoring chance, as the Deacons' comeback effort fell just short.

"Our defense was outstanding today," head coach Peter Falloon said.  "Steven played tremendous today in net.  Unfortunately we weren't able to get much going offensively except for the late goal.  Our effort as a team today was outstanding; we are getting considerably better each game, and now we just need to fix a few minor mistakes and we'll start getting on the winning end of our matches."

The Deacons return to action on September 8 with their home opener against C.W. Post University.  The opening whistle is set for 3:30 PM.
