Lady Deacons roll in weekend tri-match

Notch victories over Goldey Beacom, Mercy in Saturday action

BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The women's volleyball team moved to 6-8 on the season and 5-5 in CACC play Saturday afternoon, as they won both legs of their weekend tri-match with victories over conference foe Goldey Beacom College and non-conference counterpart Mercy College.  The Lady Deacons topped the Lightning of Goldey Beacom 3-1, and swept Mercy 3-0 to conclude their perfect day.

In the opening leg of the tri-match, Bloomfield stormed out of the gate in a dominant 25-14 opening set victory.  They were able to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match against Goldey Beacom, rolling to a 25-12 victory.  The Lightning moved to within a set in the fourth frame, earning a 25-18 victory, but the Lady Deacons quickly rebounded, closing out the match with an emphatic 25-9 win to take a 3-1 match victory.

Da'Cheray Thomas was the top offensive performer in the first leg of the tri-match for Bloomfield, posting a team-high eight kills in the win.  Suzy Zanette and Uerequenia Pereira tallied seven kills of their own, with Brittany Devries picking up 21 digs in the victory.

In the Lady Deacons' second match of the day, Coach Valbrun's club was able to outlast the Mercy College Mavericks in a seesaw opening set, prevailing 25-20 to take a 1-0 lead.  The home team found their rhythm in the second frame, dominating the Mavericks and rolling to a 25-13 victory to take a 2-0 lead and put Mercy on the ropes.  It appeared as if the Mavericks would force the Lady Deacons to a fourth set for the second time on the day, but Bloomfield was able to outlast a late Mercy charge to take the third set 25-23, sweeping the Mavericks and picking up a 3-0 win to conclude the perfect afternoon.

Pereira was the top scorer in the team's second victory of the day, posting 13 kills and 15 digs in the win.  Zanette was outstanding both offensively and defensively, notching 12 kills, 12 digs and four service aces in the triumph.  Devries and Evelyn Ferreira bolstered the defensive effort for the Lady Deacons, registering 17 and 10 digs rescpectively.

The team returns to action Tuesday, October 12 with a pivotal road match against CACC North Division rival Caldwell College.  The opening whistle is set for 7:00 PM.
