BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The men's basketball team ran their home winning streak to 21 consecutive victories Thursday night, as they took care of the Post University Eagles 94-69 in the Deacons' Den.
It appeared as though the Deacons were quickly on their way to suffering their first home loss in nearly two full seasons of basketball: The Eagles got the momentum early, capitalizing on BC turnovers and running the floor to eventually mount an 18-11 advantage midway through the first half. Everything seemed to be unraveling for Coach Holmes' squad only a quarter of the way through the action; that is, of course, until Superman entered the building.
As if he'd suddenly flipped a switch, junior guard
Gage Daye took complete control of the action, gashing the Eagles' defense with his lethal penetration game, leaving a trail of defenders in his wake as he drove to the rack to either dish to a teammate or finish with one of the highlight-reel layup moves that have become some of his staples.
In a season filled with extraordinary performances, this was Daye's most transcendent; connecting on 17 of his 29 field goal attempts, the sharpshooter finished 6-11 from beyond the three-point line, dished out seven assists, and pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds. His 28 first-half points helped the Deacons mount a comfortable 46-31 advantage, and it was clear the Deacons' faithful were in for a special second half of basketball.
Number ten dismantled the bewildered Eagles by creating opportunities for his teammates in the second stanza, driving to the rack at will and finding an open teammate with a pretty no-look feed.
Matt Wafula was the beneficiary of several Daye helpers, totaling 17 points in the win and playing huge defense in the paint with a game-high five blocks.
But as the minutes dwindled, Daye put a final exclamation point on the night, driving to the rim and draining a floater to move his point total to a game-high 41, exiting the game with just over three minutes remaining having sealed a 94-69 victory for his Deacons. With the win, the club moves to 18-6 and 12-3 in CACC play, while the Eagles fall to 9-15 overall and 5-9 in CACC play.
Lost in the glow of Daye's unbelievable performance, Post forward Trevon Hamlet posted a team-high 32 points on 14-28 shooting, and created fits for the Deacons' defense from the opening tip. Spencer Smith was also solid in defeat, notching 12 points.
The Deacons return to action Saturday, February 20 with a home contest against USP. The game will be Senior Day for the squad, with each senior being honored prior to tip-off. The opening whistle is set for 3:00 PM.
