Deacons drop regular season finale to Wilmington 66-64

Daye's 18 points not enough to earn BC's 21st regular season victory

WILMINGTON, DE - The men's basketball team closed their 2009-10 regular season with a loss Sunday afternoon, as they were edged by the Wilmington University Wildcats 66-64 in their final tuneup for next week's CACC Tournament.

The Deacons' final regular season road game saw the club let a victory that had seemed within reach slip away in the waning moments.  Coach Holmes' club was able to keep their hot shooting from the previous day's victory over Caldwell College going a second-straight day, as they rode a 40% shooting performance from the floor to a 36-26 advantage heading into halftime.

But it was a different story in the final stanza, as the Wildcats outscored the Deacons 40-28 over the final 20 minutes of play to steal the win.  The Deacons' high-octane offense sputtered, with the club shooting just 26% from the field in the second half.  Bloomfield was able to tie the score at 64 with 90 seconds to play, but a jumper by Brandon Savage with 15 ticks remaining clinched the victory for the Wildcats, who earned a spot in the CACC Tournament with the win.

Gage Daye was the top scorer for the Deacons,  notching 18 points and pulled down six rebounds, while dishing out a pair of assists and swiping three steals.  Chris Sampson nearly achieved another double-double in the loss, going for nine points and nine rebounds while adding three steals and a block on the defensive end.

The Deacons have earned the number one seed heading into the Tournament, and a share of the North Division regular season title with Felician College.  The club will open the Tournament Monday night, with a home game against Post University, a team the Deacons swept in their regular season series.  Tip-off for Monday night's matchup is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
