BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The women's volleyball team fell to 0-1 on the young season Wednesday night, as they opened their 2010 campaign and their CACC schedule with a 3-1 loss to the Dominican College Lady Chargers in the Deacons' Den.
The opening set was a seesaw battle that saw neither side hold a lead of more than six points, with the Lady Chargers holding a 15-9 advantage halfway through the frame. The Lady Deacons were able to run off seven out of the next eight points to cut the lead to 16-15, but Dominican was able to hold off the run and pull away for a 25-21 set victory.
The Lady Deacons were able to even the match at a set apiece in the second game, as they outlasted their in-conference counterparts in a 28-26 set that saw Bloomfield capitalize on several Dominican errors. Coach Valbrun's squad was able to build a quick 3-0 advantage in set number three, but the Lady Chargers rebounded to build a 16-10 advantage, eventually securing a 25-17 win. Dominican finished off the win in the game's fourth set, topping the Lady Deacons 25-15 to take the opening match of the clubs' CACC North Division schedule.
Junior
Uerequenia Pereira led the charge for Bloomfield, tallying 12 kills and an ace in the loss. Sophomore Da'Cheray Thomas was the other Lady Deacon to post double-digit kills, totaling 10 with four service aces. Pereira and
Evelyn Ferreira led the defense with 17 digs apiece, with
Brittany Devries tallying 15 digs in the setback.
Gabriella Betoni registered 26 assists in the loss.
The team returns to action Saturday, September 11 when they travel to Syracuse, NY to take on Southern New Hampshire University and LeMoyne College tri-match action. The opening whistle for game one is set for Noon.
