BOX SCORE
BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (November 17, 2012) - Sophomore shooting guard
Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) led five double-figure scorers with a team-high 17 points Saturday afternoon, as the Bloomfield College Men's Basketball team moved to 1-3 on the season with a 66-56 home victory over non-conference opponent Adelphi University.
On a mission from the opening tip, the Deacons jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the day's action and put the Panthers in an early hole. Bloomfield would lead wire-to-wire in the 40-minute affair, reigniting their offensive attack by shooting just under 54% from the field and a scorching 63% from beyond the arc in eight attempts in the first half to mount a 37-23 lead heading into the break.
It would be more of the same in the second stanza, as Bloomfield would lead by as many as 23 points in the half while stifling the Adelphi offense to give the club its best defensive performance of the young season. The Deacons would hold the Panthers to just 30% shooting on the afternoon, creating 15 points off turnovers to seal the victory. Adelphi would narrow the margin late in the contest, but the comeback effort would fall short, giving Bloomfield its first victory of the 2012-2013 season and snapping the team's three-game skid that began the campaign.
Williams continued the stellar start to his sophomore campaign by going 6-10 from the field with a game-high five steals in 28 minutes, while rookie
Erik Sanders (New York, N.Y.) totaled a career-high 13 points off the bench in a perfect 4-4 performance from the field. Sophomore
Stacey Upshaw-Goree (Lindenwold, N.J.) shot an even 50% from the floor to total 12 points, while junior guards
Terry Hicks (Neptune, N.J.) and
Dondre Whitmore (Trenton, N.J.) notched 10 points apiece in the win. Hicks also led the club in rebounds (nine) and assists (four) in a solid all-around effort.
"It's nice to get our first win of the season, but hopefully this shows our team the way they are capable of playing, and the teams they are capable of beating," Deacons head coach
Gerald Holmes said. "We are capable of beating anyone any time we step on the floor, our players just need to believe that. Once that happens, they will be tough to beat. Hopefully today was the first step towards them realizing the potential they have as a group to be a great team this year."
Bloomfield returns to action Tuesday, November 20, when they welcome non-conference opponent Dowling College for a midweek home matchup. Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
