Deacons best Post in 75-72 overtime thriller

BOX SCORE

WATERBURY, Conn. -
Senior forward Matt Wafula (Harlem, N.Y.) continued his streak of brilliant play with a game-high 26 points and the final bucket of regulation that forced overtime Thursday night, as Bloomfield's men's basketball team rallied to top CACC North Division rival Post University in a 75-72 overtime road victory.  The win moves the Deacons to 20-6 overall and 14-2 in conference action, earning the team their sixth 20-win season under head coach Gerald Holmes.

The Deacons controlled the tempo early, jumping out to a 21-11 lead midway through the opening half.  Post would counter with a spurt of their own, engineering a 16-6 run to knot the score at 27 with just under two minutes remaining in the period.  Bloomfield would close the period by scoring seven of the final nine points, however, grabbing a 34-29 advantage heading into the intermission.

Post would open the second half hot in the clubs' seesaw battle, eventually grabbing a 41-40 lead with 15 minutes to play.  Tied at 46 with 10:42 remaining, Post would take hold of the contest, leading by as many as five points over the next nine minutes of action.  Bloomfield would remain within striking distance, though, cutting the Eagles' lead to 65-63 on a pair of Wafula free-throws with 40 seconds to play.

Post's Jamie Wilcox went 1-2 on consecutive trips to the free-throw line, opening the door for the Deacons to even the score and send the game to extra time.  Mike Williams (Trenton, N.J.) converted a layup to bring the score to 66-65, and Wilcox's second 1-2 trip to the charity stripe moved the Post lead to 67-65 with 15 seconds to go.  Enter Wafula, who after missing his first attempt to tie the game converted a layup with .01 left on the clock to send the game to overtime tied at 67 in dramatic fashion.

The comeback would give the Deacons all the momentum they would need, as Bloomfield outscored the Eagles 8-4 over the five-minute period to capture the come-from-behind victory.  Wafula closed out the victory by totaling six points in the period, willing the team to their 20th victory of the season and moving the club to 7-4 in road games this season.

Wafula added five rebounds and a game-high four steals in the victory, while rookie guard Marvin Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) netted 13 points and seven rebounds.  Senior point guard Ahmad Harris (Linden, N.J.) totaled 12 points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists, while Kevin Udo (West Orange, N.J.) nearly posted a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Bloomfield returns to action Saturday, February 18 when they host CACC South Division rival Chestnut Hill College for Senior Day.  Tip-off for the contest is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
