BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Junior transfer,
Mariah Frazier (Port Angeles, W.A.) went 5-for-8 on the day including three homeruns to lead the Bears softball team to their first sweep ever over Dowling College Thursday evening since becoming an NCAA Division II member. Bloomfield improved to 20-21 on the season with the non-conference sweep of the Golden Lions who fell to 12-30 at Clarks Pond South with the setbacks.
In game one, Frazier led off the home half of the 1st with a bunt and reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. She later came around to score on a single thru the left side by
Lauren Bueno (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) that put the Bears up 1-0.
Frazier belted a solo shot to left center that doubled the Bloomfield lead in the fifth inning and that was all the offense the home team would need as
Stephanie Miller (Temecula, Calif.) picked up her fifth win of the season. Miller (5-10) pitched five scoreless innings and struck out two to give way to
Kirsten Wilson (Beaver Falls, P.A.) in the circle, who picked up her first save of 2016.
Dowling looked to recover from the shutout as they jumped out in game two, 1-0 after the top of the first but the Bears answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning.
Veronica Cobos (Torrence, Calif.) singled to right to lead off the home half and then Frazier crushed her second homer on the day, this time over the centerfield fence for a 2-1 advantage.
Dowling countered with a two-run shot in the top of the second and held a brief 3-2 advantage until Bloomfield pushed across the equalizer during the home at-bat. Junior
Aubrey Orr (Gallup, N.M.) hit a lead-off ground rule double over the right field fence. Wilson later singled to center field that scored Orr and knotted the score at 3-3.
The Bears seized control in the fourth with two long balls over the fence as Frazier launched her third homer of the day and
Faith Apolskis (Soquel, Calif.) got in on the action with a shot to left center for a 5-3 home team lead. The Golden Lions responded in a big way with a three-run blast in the top of the fifth inning.
Bloomfield dug deep and retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Paige Lafferty (Liberty Hill, T.X.) drew a walk and later scored on a Frazier single up the middle to tie the game at 6-6. Wilson followed with a single thru the left-side that plated Orr who had reached on a fielders choice earlier.
Miller started game two as well in the circle but was relieved by
Gabby Citriniti (Corning, N.Y.) in the top of the fourth with the game tied. Citriniti (4-4) gave up three runs on four hits in two innings of work but came away with the win as Wilson picked up her second save of the year, keeping the Golden Lions in check to preserve the sweep.
Next up for the Bears, they close out the regular season with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-dip with Goldey-Beacom College on the road Saturday. The league match up is slated to start with game one's first pitch at 1:00 pm. The Bears are currently in seventh place in the CACC standings with the top 8 teams advancing to post-season play.
