BLOOMFIELD, NJ - The men's basketball team improved to 5-3 on the season Sunday afternoon, as they ran their home winning streak to 27 consecutive games with an 85-75 non-conference victory over the University of New Haven.
The Chargers were able to keep pace with Bloomfield's efficient offensive attack in the early going, matching Coach Holmes' group basket for basket through the game's first ten minutes of play. After knotting the score at 22 with just over eight minutes remaining in the period, the Chargers engineered a 12-2 run, leaving the Deacons reeling and mounting a 34-24 lead with four minutes remaining. Senior guard
Gage Daye's 17 first-half points were not enough to close the margin, the Deacons' lengthy home winning streak in serious jeopardy as the club trailed 42-34 at the break.
But Daye would mirror his output over the first 20 minutes in the second half, willing his team back into the game and helping to trim the lead to four at 53-49 with 14:44 remaining. A quick 7-3 run brought the Deacons back even at 56, the Chargers losing steam as the minutes dwindled. Bloomfield would finally overtake New Haven midway through the second half and never looked back, outscoring the Chargers 25-15 over the final ten minutes to score the double-digit victory.
Daye's game-high 34 points led the charge, the senior posting his third-straight extraordinary performance to help guide his team to the victory. The All-American also pulled down six rebounds and dished out a trio of assists to go with his four steals, completing his third-straight game with at least 29 points. Freshman forward
Mike Williams was rock-solid in the post, notching 15 points and three rebounds.
Terry Hicks came off the bench to tally 10 points and three assists, while
Ahmad Harris made his presence felt at both ends of the floor with eight points, nine rebounds and a pair of steals.
The team returns to action on December 30 with a non-conference road contest against Saint Anselm College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
